Today, we visited another children’s home and met an incredible lady from New Zealand whose story deeply touched every one of our volunteers.
Twenty-seven years ago, she was a highly paid pilot. One day, she met a young girl in Bangkok whose only wish was to see her birth mother again. Without hesitation, she took leave from work and personally drove the little girl all the way to Kanchanaburi in search of her mother.
Sadly, when they arrived, they discovered that the girl’s mother had passed away in an accident.
With nowhere else to go and no family left to care for her, this remarkable woman made a life-changing decision. She welcomed the child into her home and raised her as her own.
That single act of kindness became the beginning of a journey that has now lasted 27 years.
Today, nearly 900 children have passed through her home. Many have grown up to become doctors, engineers, teachers and other professionals. Yet despite everything she has accomplished, her passion has never wavered.
As this was our first visit, our team brought along new slippers, donated clothing, essential groceries and other daily necessities for the children.
When we asked her if there was anything else she needed, her answer left us speechless.
“Your hugs for my children.”
This year, she turns 77 years old.
Yet her greatest concern has never been herself. It has always been for the children who may not be related to her by blood, but whom she loves unconditionally as her own.
As she received the supplies we had brought from Singapore, her eyes filled with gratitude. It was one of those moments where words simply weren’t enough.
Today reminded us that charity is not just about giving.
It is about love.
It is about time.
It is about compassion.
And it is about ordinary people making extraordinary sacrifices so that others can have a better future.
What an unforgettable and humbling experience this has been for all of us.
Tomorrow, we continue to the third and final school of this charity mission before wrapping up our journey in Thailand.
